Canada sees record surge in antisemitic attacks in 2026

Violent antisemitic attacks across Canada have more than doubled compared with the previous year, putting 2026 on track to be the most violent year for the Jewish community in recent memory. Notable incidents include a May 7 shooting at the Chasidei Bobov Synagogue in Toronto that injured one person, and five arrests related to the attack. Premier Doug Ford called the attacks “disgusting,” while Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned them as “an abhorrent act of antisemitism,” pledged full support to law enforcement, and announced an additional $75 million in federal funding for Jewish community centres and synagogues. On June 1 the government created a Ministerial Advisory Council on Rights, Equality, and Inclusion to study the drivers of antisemitism. Critics point to a comparatively muted response to a wave of church desecrations and arsons over the past five years, including incidents linked to historic residential‑school grievances.
