Canada sees surge in domestic tourism, parking woes hit Lake Louise

A Leger 360 survey released in June 2026 found that 77 percent of Canadians planning a summer leisure trip intend to stay within the country, marking a sharp shift toward domestic vacations. Travel operator TRAVELSAVERS Canada attributes the trend to global uncertainty, a volatile exchange rate and rising costs of overseas travel, with popular destinations including the Maritimes, Newfoundland, British Columbia and the Canadian Rockies.

Lake Louise in Banff National Park, a flagship site for the stay‑cation boom, is experiencing severe parking congestion. Parks Canada reports that about 75 percent of vehicles attempting to park at the lakeshore during peak periods are turned away, with the 400‑spot lot filling by 8 a.m. on busy days. The park sees roughly 2.6 million visitors annually, a 70 percent increase since 2010, and 87 percent arrive by personal vehicle. Parks Canada urges visitors to use public transit to reduce traffic and protect wildlife corridors, noting that high traffic can deter species such as grizzly bears from crossing the road.
