Canada strengthens AI leadership through Germany tech alliance

At the ALL IN summit in Montreal, Canada demonstrated a renewed push to reclaim leadership in the artificial intelligence sector through international cooperation and significant investment. A central focus was the strengthening of a sovereign technology alliance with Germany, the event's country of honor. This partnership saw more than 40 German companies engage with Canadian leaders, including a collaboration between Toronto-based Cohere and Germany’s Aleph Alpha to compete with major US AI firms.

To address AI safety and existential risks, Canada and Germany jointly backed Yoshua Bengio’s LawZero institute with approximately $300 million CAD to develop “safe-by-design” AI. Additionally, the Quebec institute Mila is set to receive tens of millions of dollars to support open-source AI applications. While the summit highlighted industrial growth, it also faced public opposition, including protests and demonstrations regarding the risks and societal impacts of AI technology.

Government officials also signaled intentions to implement more robust digital regulation in Canada to manage the rapid advancement of the industry.
