Canada Sunscreen Guidance Highlights New FDA-Approved Ingredient and Reapplication Tips

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved bemotrizinol, the first new sunscreen filter in the United States in more than two decades, offering broad‑spectrum UVA and UVB protection. Canadian dermatologists note that the ingredient, already used in Europe and Asia, is expected to appear in North American formulas within the year.

Health Canada recommends using a broad‑spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen applied at least 15 minutes before exposure and reapplying roughly every two hours. Dr. Cheryl Rosen of Toronto Western Hospital explains that reapplication frequency can be reduced when activity levels are low, such as sitting under a tree, but remains essential during swimming or heavy sweating. The agency also advises a teaspoon‑per‑body‑part amount, though KINeSYS founder Lisa Heggie says the exact quantity varies with skin exposure and clothing.

These guidelines aim to improve daily sunscreen use across all skin types in Canada.
