Canada suspends purchase of 16 U.S. Black Hawk helicopters
Canada has suspended the procurement of 16 UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters from the United States. The Sikorsky-manufactured aircraft, intended for Canadian special forces to replace older CH-146 Griffon models, were nearing the final stages of approval by the U.S. Department of State.
The decision follows deteriorating diplomatic and trade relations between Ottawa and Washington under the administration of President Donald Trump. Tensions have escalated due to trade disputes, including significant tariffs on Canadian imports such as steel and aluminum.
Analysts suggest the suspension is part of a broader strategy by the Canadian government to reduce military dependence on the American defense industry and increase autonomy in equipment selection. Similar uncertainties have been noted regarding other American contracts, including F-35 fighter jets, Raytheon armored vehicles, and Google cloud services.
