Canada targets skilled professionals for Express Entry recruitment

Canada has launched a new Express Entry recruitment initiative targeting professionals in critical sectors to address national workforce shortages. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is prioritizing candidates in healthcare, social services, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), skilled trades, transport, and education.

French-language proficiency has been identified as a key priority group within this category-based selection system. This focus provides specific opportunities for skilled immigrants, including those from West African nations like Ghana, who possess French-language skills.

Despite these recruitment efforts, challenges remain regarding the integration of highly educated immigrants. Data from Statistics Canada indicates that approximately 33 per cent of immigrants with post-secondary education report being overqualified for their current roles, compared to 19 per cent of Canadian-born workers. This mismatch is often attributed to the undervaluation of foreign credentials and a preference among employers for local work experience, which can impact the mental health and professional integration of new arrivals.
