Canada tax policy discussions and 2026 federal brackets

In British Columbia, political parties are debating different approaches to taxing high earners to fund public services. The NDP proposes increasing income tax rates for the top two brackets by two percentage points and creating a new bracket for annual income exceeding $1 million. This measure is estimated to affect only the top three per cent of earners and could raise approximately $750 million annually by 2027. Meanwhile, the Green Party has proposed a wealth tax targeting large fortunes, including a one-time tax on assets above $50 million and ongoing annual rates for higher thresholds.

At the federal level, the Canada Revenue Agency has established the 2026 income tax brackets. The lowest federal rate is set at 14 per cent for the first $58,523 of taxable income, while the top rate is 33 per cent for income above $258,482. These brackets include a 2.0 per cent indexation to account for inflation.
