Environment Canada launches targeted weather alert system

Environment and Climate Change Canada is deploying a new, targeted weather alert system designed to reduce ‘alert fatigue’ by providing more precise warnings for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. Unlike the previous system, which issued broad alerts across large regional zones, the new method uses freeform polygons to track storms in real time. These polygons will follow the projected path of the weather event, narrowing at the point of highest concern and widening to account for uncertainty downstream.

The update specifically applies to tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings; weather watches and other alerts, such as heat warnings, will continue to use broader coverage areas. The goal is to ensure residents receive notifications only when they are likely to be directly impacted, thereby increasing the perceived importance of emergency alerts.

Separately, in southwestern Ontario, the township of Southwold has maintained a state of emergency following heavy rainfall that caused significant property and road damage. Officials are currently seeking financial support from the provincial government to assist affected residents as restoration work continues.
