Six Members of Parliament have announced departures that will trigger federal byelections across Canada. Conservative MP Richard Martel (Chicoutimi‑Le Fjord, QC) resigned after being appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Mark Carney. Liberal MP Nate Erskine‑Smith (Beaches‑East York, ON) quit his seat following an aborted bid for the Ontario Liberal leadership. Former cabinet minister Jonathan Wilkinson (North Vancouver‑Capilano, BC) resigned to become Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. Conservative Cathay Wagantall (Yorkton‑Melville, SK) will leave her post on Aug. 31, having already named a successor candidate. Alexandre Boulerice, the sole NDP MP from Quebec (Rosemont‑La Petite‑Patrie), intends to resign before the fall provincial election to run for Québec Solidaire. Bloc MP Simon‑Pierre Savard‑Tremblay (Saint‑Hyacinthe‑Bagot‑Acton, QC) resigned after switching to the Parti Québécois. Environment minister Steven Guilbeault (Laurier‑Sainte‑Marie, QC) also plans to vacate his seat over policy disagreements. Under the Canada Elections Act, the prime minister must call each byelection within 11 to 180 days of a vacancy, with voting dates ranging from about one to seven months after the resignation.
