Canada to match Red Cross donations for Summerland wildfire relief

The Canadian federal government has announced it will match all funds raised through the Red Cross fire appeal for recovery efforts following the Bald Range wildfire. Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience, stated that the government will match donations dollar for dollar to ensure communities receive assistance as quickly as possible.

The wildfire, which began on August 7, has burned approximately 25,191 hectares. The blaze destroyed an estimated 40 structures in Summerland and roughly 150 structures in the surrounding areas. During the height of the fire, the entire community of Summerland and nearby regions were placed under evacuation orders. While the fire is currently described as being held, local officials, including Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes, emphasized the urgent need for funding to support community recovery plans.
