Alphonso Davies ruled out of Canada’s World Cup opener

Bayern Munich left‑back and Canada captain Alphonso Davies will miss the co‑hosts’ opening match against Bosnia‑Herzegovina on 12 June because of a lingering hamstring/upper‑leg injury sustained in Bayern’s Champions League semi‑final against Paris Saint‑Germain. Coach Jesse Marsch said an MRI showed “very positive signs” and that Davies is “healing incredibly well”, but he will not be available for the first group‑stage game.

Marsch added that the medical team will increase the training load in the coming days and hopes Davies can return for the second group match versus Qatar on 18 June, with a further chance of playing in the final group fixture against Switzerland on 24 June. In his absence Canada will look to striker Jonathan David and other attackers to provide the offensive spark.

The injury is a significant blow for the host nation, which is aiming for its first World Cup point and hopes to advance to the knockout stage for the first time.
