Canada urged to invest in critical mineral projects for energy transition
Canada must transition its critical minerals strategy from high-level agreements into concrete investment projects to capitalize on the global energy transition, according to Clean Energy Canada. As the global economy electrifies, minerals such as cobalt, copper, graphite, lithium, nickel, and rare earth elements are becoming increasingly vital.
There is a significant opportunity for Canada to supply these minerals to Europe as both regions seek to diversify supply chains and reduce reliance on concentrated existing markets. Experts suggest that Canada should focus its efforts on specific minerals where it possesses strong resources and market potential, rather than spreading investment too thin. Furthermore, development must extend beyond extraction to include investment in domestic processing and refining capabilities.
