Canada-US trade talks collapse as tariffs escalate

Trade negotiations between Canada and the United States collapsed on August 21, leading to a significant escalation in protectionist measures. The United States has imposed 50 percent tariffs on nearly US$20 billion worth of Canadian goods and has announced plans to increase tariffs on Canadian automobiles to 50 percent starting in 2027.

In response, the Canadian government has prepared retaliatory tariffs on approximately $27.6 billion worth of U.S. imports, scheduled to take effect on September 8. Economic analysts warn that the dispute could jeopardize more than 87,000 Canadian jobs.

President Donald Trump stated that companies can avoid these tariffs by moving manufacturing to the United States. He also indicated a shift in how the U.S. approaches bilateral trade with Canada, describing the country as difficult to deal with regarding trade matters.
