Canada-U.S. trade tensions escalate through retaliatory tariffs

Escalating trade tensions between Canada and the United States have led to significant economic volatility. Following the imposition of tariffs on steel and automobiles in early 2025, President Donald Trump signed proclamations in July 2025 imposing an additional 50 percent tariff on various Canadian products. Canada responded with retaliatory tariffs on approximately CAD $27.6 billion of U.S. imports, prompting further U.S. bans on Canadian dairy, motorcycles, and alcohol.

Researchers at the University of Toronto have launched ‘MappingTariffs’, a project designed to track the regional impacts of these trade disputes. The project highlights how the economic strain affects specific sectors and locations. In Southern Ontario, the automotive industry is facing concentrated impacts due to its close ties to Michigan. Additionally, the wine industry in regions such as Niagara-on-the-Lake and St. Catharines faces potential job losses estimated between three and seven percent.

The current instability is compounded by the fact that the United States declined to extend the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) for another 16-year term, leaving trade deals subject to annual reviews. Analysts note that Canada’s high level of economic reliance on the U.S.—with over 70 percent of exports heading south—has increased its vulnerability to these policy shifts.
