Canada-U.S. travel increases amid trade tensions
Travel between Canada and the United States increased in September compared to the previous year. According to Statistics Canada, Canadian residents made 1.9 million trips to the U.S., a 6.8% increase from September 2025, marking the sixth consecutive month of year-over-year growth. Meanwhile, visits to Canada by Americans rose to 1.8 million, a 17.2% increase from the same month last year, representing the eighth consecutive month of growth.
This rise in travel occurs amid heightened trade tensions. The Trump administration recently announced bans on certain Canadian imports, including most Canadian alcoholic beverages, dairy by-products, and some motorcycles. This has escalated a trade conflict that led Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to suspend negotiations in August. Following U.S. tariffs on $28 billion worth of Canadian products, Canada implemented retaliatory measures on September 8.
