Canada-Vietnam Cultural and Educational Council expands Vietnamese language network

The Canada-Vietnam Cultural and Educational Council (CVCEC) is working to expand a Vietnamese language teaching network across Canada to help preserve the native language and cultural identity of younger generations.

Many children of Vietnamese descent in Canada primarily use English or French, often understanding Vietnamese spoken by parents but responding in their dominant local languages. To address this, the CVCEC is coordinating between volunteer teachers, families, and community organizations to implement standardized programs and pedagogical materials.

The initiative combines in-person classes with online teaching platforms to create a more consistent learning environment. In Prince Edward Island, for example, three Vietnamese language and traditional culture classes currently serve 30 students, with some children successfully learning to read, tell stories, and write in their mother tongue after two years of instruction.
