Canada warns of global order ‘fracture’ at UN General Assembly

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand stated at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly that the international order is experiencing a ‘fracture, not a transition.’ She warned that major powers are withdrawing from economic cooperation and increasingly challenging national sovereignty, leading to the de-integration of the global economy.

To address these shifts, Anand announced that Canada will pursue ‘greater strategic autonomy’ by reducing dependence on single partners and expanding relations with both traditional and new allies. The government intends to form issue-based coalitions with small, middle, and large powers while practicing a ‘values-based realism’ to help shape the evolving international order.

Canada’s regional priorities include reaffirmed support for Ukraine and NATO, strengthening European ties, and increasing Arctic cooperation. Anand also emphasized Canada’s presence in the Indo-Pacific, deepening economic ties with India and China, seeking opportunities in the Persian Gulf and Latin America, and expanding trade relations with Africa.
