Canada Warns of Warmer, Drier Summer Ahead with Heat Health Risks

Environment and Climate Change Canada released its seasonal outlook indicating that much of the country will experience a warmer‑than‑normal summer, with the strongest warm signals in British Columbia, Yukon, the mainland Northwest Territories, northern Prairies and Atlantic Canada. The agency noted that precipitation forecasts point to a generally drier summer, though rainfall will remain highly variable.

Scientists highlight a moderate‑to‑strong El Niño developing this year, potentially becoming one of the strongest on record, which could influence the temperature pattern. Climate researchers also emphasized that Canada’s average summer temperature has risen about 1.65 °C since 1948, nearly twice the global rate, primarily due to human‑induced climate change.

Health Canada’s Heat Action Division warned that extreme heat poses heightened risks for older adults, infants, young children and people with chronic illnesses, urging the public to stay hydrated and take precautions.
