Canada readies retaliation to US 50% tariff threat
U.S. President Donald Trump announced a series of 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian goods – including honey, liquor, cement, dairy, certain wood products and hockey sticks – to take effect on 19 August 2026. The measures target about C$28 billion (≈US$20 billion) of Canadian exports, roughly 5 % of U.S. imports from Canada.
Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters that “everything is on the table” and that Canada will consider a full range of responses if the tariffs are implemented, but the government will not act pre‑emptively.
