Canada wildfire conditions twice as likely due to climate change, study finds
A rapid study by the international research group World Weather Attribution concluded that human‑caused climate change roughly doubled the likelihood of the extreme fire‑weather conditions that fueled the massive July‑August 2026 wildfires in Ontario and the Northwest Territories. The analysis compared current climate data with a hypothetical pre‑industrial climate and found that the hot, dry and windy conditions now expected to trigger large fires could recur every 2‑6 years in the Northwest Territories and every 6‑15 years in Ontario, whereas without climate change they would have been rarer than once in 40 years.
Scientists cited the United States’ historic emissions of carbon‑intensive fuels as a major driver of the warming that made these conditions more probable. The study, which has not yet been peer‑reviewed, also noted that the smoke plume spread across the border, degrading air quality for millions of people from Thunder Bay to the northeastern United States. U.S. President Donald Trump responded by blaming Canada’s fire‑management practices and threatening punitive action, a stance rejected by fire and climate experts who urged him to look at U.S. emissions instead.
