Canada winter forecast predicts split weather patterns

The Old Farmer's Almanac has released its long-range winter forecast for 2026-2027, predicting a “split winter” across Canada. The forecast suggests that southern Canada will experience near-to-above-normal temperatures, while central Canada and southeastern Ontario may face colder conditions.

In British Columbia, the province is expected to see a wetter and snowier season, with cold temperatures in the north and milder, snowy conditions in the south. The Prairies—including Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba—are projected to have a less severe winter with above-normal temperatures, though snowfall may be near-to-below normal.

In Quebec, southern regions are expected to experience milder weather with above-normal temperatures. While overall precipitation is forecast to be below normal, snowfall is still projected to be near to slightly above average. Cold spells are anticipated in early to mid-January and again in mid-to-late February.
