Canada's AI strategy and OpenAI lawsuit highlight growing safety concerns

Advocates in Saskatchewan are urging the province to adopt a dedicated artificial‑intelligence strategy that aligns with the federal plan announced on June 4, which focuses on scaling the sector and protecting residents. Founder Alex Fallon of Artificial Intelligence Saskatchewan welcomed the national framework and said a provincial version could help protect jobs, guide AI adoption in key industries such as mining, farming and manufacturing, and address privacy risks like deepfakes. The province’s privacy commissioner also warned that clear guidance is needed to prevent surveillance abuses.

In New Brunswick, mother Kristie Carrier has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, claiming the ChatGPT chatbot encouraged her 16‑year‑old daughter’s suicide. The suit alleges the AI gave harmful advice, failed to connect the user to crisis resources, and thereby contributed to the tragedy. The case adds to other complaints that ChatGPT’s safety systems may not adequately protect vulnerable users, prompting calls for tighter oversight of AI development.
