Canada's Banking System Gains Faster Cross‑Border and Real‑Time Payments
Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) and Toronto‑Dominion Bank (TD) became the first North American institutions to launch SWIFT’s new international retail‑transfer initiative. The service delivers the full amount sent, near‑instant delivery—in many cases within minutes—and transparent fees and exchange rates for funds arriving from countries such as Australia and Belgium. Over 60 banks from 25 nations have joined the programme.
Separately, Payments Canada is developing the Real‑Time Rail, a national 24/7 clearing and settlement system slated for a fourth‑quarter 2026 launch. Built on ISO 20022 messaging, RTR will enable irrevocable, instant payments between participating banks and underpin the country’s upcoming open‑banking framework, opening new avenues for financial‑service innovation and competition.
Together, the SWIFT upgrade and the Real‑Time Rail represent a major step toward modernising Canada’s payments landscape, promising faster, more transparent cross‑border transactions and a foundation for future digital‑finance services.
