Canada's Carney says USMCA renewal talks ongoing, no formal meeting with Trump

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters at the G7 summit that he had not had a formal meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, but the two leaders spoke several times in the previous 36 hours on topics including the economy, bilateral relations, artificial intelligence, Ukraine and Iran.

Carney emphasized that the absence of a face‑to‑face G7 encounter does not constitute a “disrespect” and said “Nous n’avons pas abordé ça” – the USMCA renewal was not discussed, even though the agreement is due for mandatory review on July 1. He warned that the United States appears uninterested in meeting the deadline, which could trigger an annual renewal process.

Canadian trade minister Dominic LeBlanc said Canada expects parallel bilateral deals with the United States alongside the USMCA. Carney also noted progress with U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer and mentioned a deal limiting Chinese electric‑vehicle imports to less than 3 % of the Canadian market, about 49,000 cars, a limit that Trump welcomed.
