Canada’s trade minister Dominic LeBlanc is travelling to Washington this week, accompanied by chief trade negotiator Janice Charette, for talks with U.S. officials. Canada is seeking a 16‑year extension of CUSMA, but the Trump administration announced in July that it would not extend the trilateral agreement, triggering an annual rolling review that could last up to a decade before the pact expires unless all three parties agree. The tariff threat and broader trade tensions are compounded by disputes such as the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge linking Ontario and Michigan. Ottawa hopes the talks will ease pressures and secure a renewed agreement.
