Canada's Federal Early Retirement Program Sparks Over 9,000 Applications
More than 9,100 Canadian federal public servants submitted applications to the government's Early Retirement Incentive Program before the July 24, 2026 deadline. The scheme, introduced by the Liberal government to trim the civil‑service headcount, allows eligible employees to retire early with an immediate pension calculated on years of service and without the usual pension penalties.
Eligibility requires employees to be at least 50 years old with a minimum of ten years of federal service and two years of pensionable service (or 55 years old under the same service criteria for those who joined after 2013). The Treasury Board announced that no specific target number of retirements has been set, though the broader plan aims to reduce the federal workforce by 28,000 positions by 2029.
Applicants must have their retirement approved by departmental vice‑ministers, who will verify that staff reductions do not jeopardize the delivery of services. Those who retire before meeting the age and service thresholds would face a permanent 5 % pension reduction for each year of early departure.
