Canada's Federal EV Subsidy Program Pays Out $190 Million in 2026

Canadians claimed more than $190 million in federal electric‑vehicle rebates during 2026, according to Transport Canada data showing 44,315 claims through June, half of which originated in Quebec. Ottawa relaunched the rebate program early in the year, allocating $2.275 billion to run for up to five years and setting a target of 840,000 new EVs on the road.

Under the scheme, eligible buyers receive up to $5,000 toward a new EV or $2,500 for a plug‑in hybrid, with the rebate limited to vehicles priced below $50,000. Canadian‑built EVs such as the Dodge Charger and Chrysler Pacifica are exempt from the price cap. Statistics Canada reported EVs accounted for 9.6% of new vehicle sales in April and May, down from 12% after the previous rebate reinstatement.
