Canada's Gordie Howe Bridge Deal Hearings Blocked by Liberals

Liberal Members of Parliament voted to block parliamentary hearings that would examine the revenue‑sharing agreement tied to the Gordie Howe International Bridge. The proposed deal would have Canada share half of net toll revenues with the United States for 15 years, postponing a 2012 arrangement that required Canada to recoup construction costs before revenue sharing.

Prime Minister Mark Carney previously stated that tolls would not be split with the U.S. until the construction debt was cleared. Liberal MP Pauline Rochefort told the committee she had been confused by the government's position, while Conservative MP Harb Gill criticised the deal as a concession to the United States. Conservatives sought a motion to call three federal ministers for questioning and to task the parliamentary budget officer with analysing the bridge’s costs and revenues, but the Liberal majority rejected the motion.

The controversy centers on the transparency and fiscal implications of the cross‑border bridge agreement, which remains a point of contention between the governing Liberals and the opposition Conservatives.
