Canada's GDP rises 0.3% in May, outpacing forecasts

Canada's real gross domestic product increased 0.3% month‑on‑month in May 2026, surpassing the 0.2% growth expected by economists. The rise follows a revised April gain of 0.6% (up from 0.5%), the strongest monthly increase since July 2025.

Growth was led by the mining, quarrying and oil‑and‑gas extraction sector, which expanded 1.0% in May, with the oil‑and‑gas subsector up 0.7% thanks to higher oil‑sands production. A flash estimate shows June GDP up 0.2%, implying an annualised Q2 growth of 3.4%, well above the Bank of Canada's forecast of 2.5% for the quarter.

The Bank of Canada left its benchmark overnight policy rate unchanged at 2.25% on July 15, signalling a hold on monetary tightening as inflation pressures ease and firms adapt to U.S. tariffs.
