Canada's Pride Events Spotlight LGBTQ Inclusion and Ongoing Youth Poverty Advocacy
World Pride Toronto 2014 drew an estimated 1.2 million participants, featured more than 100 same‑sex couples marrying, and was attended by Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne. The week‑long festival celebrated the full spectrum of LGBTQ identities and was described as a vibrant display of diversity.
Advocacy groups note that challenges persist beyond the celebrations. Campaign 2000 reports that LGBTQ youth in Canada face heightened poverty, homelessness and food insecurity, often due to family rejection and discrimination. The organization calls for year‑round support and policies to address these systemic inequities.
