Canada's Prime Minister Carney Announces New Sanctions on Russia at G7 Summit

Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the margins of the G7 summit in Évian‑les‑Bains, France, and announced a new package of sanctions against Russia. The measures target 162 individuals, entities and vessels linked to the Russian war machine. In the same meeting Carney reiterated Canada's ongoing support for Ukraine, noting a total of $2.8 billion in military assistance provided in 2026 and an additional $270 million contribution to secure critical defence capabilities. Canada has now sanctioned more than 3,400 persons and entities and 600 vessels. The G7 talks also covered broader issues such as conflicts in the Middle East and the need to rethink foreign‑aid funding. Carney said Canada will continue to work with allies on energy, air‑defence and reconstruction assistance for Ukraine.
