Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney meets Macron in Paris ahead of G7 summit

Prime Minister Mark Carney travelled to Paris for a high‑level meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace. The two leaders announced a new general security information agreement to deepen defence ties and facilitate the exchange of classified data. Carney emphasized the growing relevance of a "middle‑powers" doctrine, arguing that Canada, France and Europe can together act as a powerful force for good in the coming century.

The meeting served as a pre‑summit hand‑over as the G7 presidency shifts from Canada to France. Carney and Macron discussed coordinating on the agenda for the G7 summit in Évian‑les‑Bains, which will address the war in Ukraine, security in the Gulf, regulation of artificial intelligence and social media, global trade imbalances, and critical mineral supply chains. Carney noted that the summit will also involve broader partners such as Kenya, Brazil, Egypt and India, offering a wider perspective on solutions. The talks highlighted the need for closer Canada‑Europe relations to counter what both leaders described as a fragmented international order marked by power politics and economic coercion, particularly in the context of United States President Donald Trump’s policies.
