Canada's trade surplus, corporate earnings and jobs data set to shape business week

Statistics Canada will publish June merchandise trade figures on Tuesday, showing a $4.2 billion surplus in May, the biggest in four years, driven by record exports. The agency will also release the July labour force survey on Friday, which indicated the economy added 18,000 jobs in June and that the unemployment rate fell as the FIFA World Cup and a stronger market for young workers boosted hiring.

Corporate reports are slated for the week: Shopify is expected to announce its second‑quarter results on Wednesday; Restaurant Brands International, owner of Tim Hortons, Burger King, Popeyes and Firehouse Subs, will report its second‑quarter earnings on Thursday; and energy firms Suncor Energy, South Bow Energy and Canadian Natural Resources will release quarterly results, with oil prices still volatile because of the ongoing war in the Middle East.
