Canada‑US trade negotiations strain after Trump’s harsh remarks

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the ongoing trade talks with the United States have become “unpleasant” after President Donald Trump publicly attacked Canada, calling the country “disgusting” and suggesting it could become a 51st state. Trump has already imposed tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminium and automobiles and warned he may raise duties on additional Canadian products to as much as 50% starting 19 August.

Carney affirmed that Canada remains engaged in the negotiations in Washington and stressed the talks aim to protect Canadian jobs and businesses. He also highlighted that Canada is attracting more foreign direct investment than the United States and creating jobs at roughly twice the U.S. rate in the latest quarter. The two sides continue to discuss exemptions for steel, aluminium, forest products and the auto sector, while Canadian officials warn higher U.S. tariffs could be passed on to consumers through higher prices.
