Australian sharemarket fluctuates amid tech sell-off and oil price surge

The Australian sharemarket experienced volatility as the S&P/ASX 200 saw mixed results, at times dropping below the 8,800 level due to a downturn in mining and technology sectors. While the mining sector faced pressure from falling copper prices, banking and consumer discretionary sectors provided support to the index.

Global market sentiment was heavily influenced by a significant sell-off on Wall Street, particularly within the Nasdaq, driven by investor concerns regarding the scale of artificial intelligence infrastructure spending by major tech firms. Additionally, oil prices surged to five-month highs, exceeding US$112 per barrel, following drone strikes by Iran-backed Houthi militants on Saudi Arabian energy infrastructure.

In corporate news, Zip Co shares plummeted following the disclosure of a US-based fraud incident resulting in a $10.1 million loss. Conversely, MaxiPARTS reported a 26.5% increase in first-quarter operating profit, and EVT saw a 17% rise in quarterly earnings.
