Canadian Army adopts new mission-based structure
The Canadian Army has implemented a new mission-based structure designed to enhance combat readiness, domestic defense, and operational support. This reorganization is a key component of broader modernization efforts and the country’s Defence Investment Strategy.
The new structure organizes the Army into four primary formations with distinct responsibilities:
• 1st Canadian Division (Edmonton): A high-readiness formation tasked with preparing and leading forces for major combat and overseas operations. • 2nd Canadian Division (Montréal): Focused on domestic land operations, territorial defense, emergency response, and sovereignty tasks, utilizing the Regular Force, Army Reserve, and Canadian Rangers. • Army Support Division (Kingston): Provides necessary infrastructure, services, and technical expertise for operations. • Army Doctrine and Training Centre (Kingston): Manages training and doctrine.
Lieutenant-General Michael Wright, Commander of the Canadian Army, stated that aligning formations around core responsibilities will strengthen the ability to generate forces and convert investment into operational readiness. The goal is to create a more agile Army capable of safeguarding Canadian sovereignty and delivering land power both at home and abroad.
