Canadian Army restructures divisions for large-scale combat

The Canadian Army is implementing a major structural reorganization, transitioning from geographically based divisions to those organized by specific functional purposes. This shift represents one of the most significant changes to the military's structure in decades.

As part of this transition, the 1st Canadian Division is being established at CFB Edmonton. This new division will serve as the primary force for responding to crises and conducting large-scale combat operations. It will consolidate various capabilities, including artillery, engineers, light infantry, paratroopers, and tanks and other armour. Maj. -Gen. Wade Rutland, the commander of the new division, noted that the change is a response to a shifting threat environment and a global return to large-scale combat operations.

Concurrently, the 3rd Canadian Division, which has historical roots dating back to the First World War, is being retired to the supplementary Order of Battle. This status allows the regiment to exist on paper so it can be reactivated if necessary.
