Canadian artists face new 50 per cent U.S. tariffs

Canadian artists are facing significant economic challenges due to a new round of U.S. tariffs imposed at the end of April. A 50 per cent tariff now applies to various Canadian-made visual arts, crafts, and natural materials. Affected items include paintings, drawings, original prints, sculptures, jewelry, and textiles, as well as goods made from raw furskins, leather, bone, horn, and antler.

Artists, such as Ottawa-based painter Michael Harrington, report that the loss of barrier-free access to the U.S. market is a major concern. Under the current regime, tariffs must be paid on art pieces as they cross the border, even before a sale is finalized. While some creators are seeking new buyers in Europe and within Canada to mitigate the impact, the unprecedented duties on cultural goods represent a significant shift from previous trade norms.
