Canadian athletes secure podium finishes in badminton and shot put

Canadian athletes achieved podium finishes in international competitions on Saturday.

In New Delhi, Victor Lai secured his second bronze medal in men’s singles at the badminton world championships. The 21-year-old Toronto native, seeded seventh, lost his semifinal match to France’s Alex Lanier with a score of 16-21, 21-13, 21-14. Lai’s path to the bronze included victories over Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke in the quarterfinals and Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew in the round of 16.

In Chorzów, Poland, shot putter Sarah Mitton finished third at a Diamond League meet. Mitton recorded a best throw of 19.34 metres. The event was won by Chase Jackson of the United States with a throw of 20.92 metres, while Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands took second place with 20.20 metres.
