Canadian authorities seek seizure of pet raccoon amid rabies outbreak

In Quebec, Louka Berman is evading provincial environmental enforcement officers who hold a warrant to seize his pet raccoon, Pepper. Berman recently took the animal to a refuge north of Montreal to receive a rabies vaccination, a measure taken as Quebec manages a raccoon rabies outbreak. Berman, who gained online popularity for videos featuring the raccoon, has raised thousands of dollars through fundraising to potentially establish a wildlife sanctuary.

The Ottawa Humane Society (OHS) has also issued warnings regarding the illegality and welfare risks of keeping wildlife as pets. Following a recent incident in Ottawa where a raccoon named Diesel was discovered in an apartment, the OHS emphasized that captive wild animals often struggle to adapt to natural habitats and face significant physical and psychological risks. The organization noted that many wild animals brought to their facilities require euthanasia if they are too sick or injured to be rehabilitated.
