Canadian automotive market shows resilience despite economic pressures

The Canadian automotive market has shown resilience through the first half of 2026 despite significant economic headwinds. While total new light vehicle sales fell approximately 0.7% compared to the same period in 2025, the market has avoided a collapse despite challenges such as supply chain issues, trade barriers, luxury taxes, and rising fuel prices driven by Middle East conflicts.

Data from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants indicates that light trucks continue to dominate the market, accounting for 87.2% of new light vehicle sales. Within the top segments, intermediate SUVs led growth with a 3.2% year-to-date increase, and compact luxury SUVs saw a slight gain of 0.3%. Conversely, large pickups experienced the most significant decline among leading segments, falling 4.1%.

While the first half of the year presented difficulties, a stronger third quarter helped offset earlier weaknesses in certain categories, such as compact SUVs, which saw a 7% jump in sales between July and September.
