Canadian Coast Guard orders debris removal for sunken vessel
The Canadian Coast Guard has ordered the owner of a sunken 30-foot pleasure craft near Qualicum Beach to remove debris and address the vessel. The craft was first reported overturned and submerged on June 30, prompting the Coast Guard to implement pollution containment measures and remove approximately 95 litres of diesel fuel.
By July 10, the vessel washed ashore and broke apart, leaving debris and materials such as batteries on the beach. While no further hydrocarbon pollution has been observed, the Coast Guard issued a navigational warning to mark the drifting bow section for mariners.
Following a notice of assessment in July, a formal direction was issued on August 10 requiring the owner to take corrective action. Under Canada’s ‘polluter pays’ principle, the owner is responsible for all cleanup, repairs, and response costs. If the owner fails to comply, the Coast Guard may intervene and recover the associated expenses.
