The British Columbia government has announced a major expansion of childcare services, creating approximately 1,200 new licensed before- and after-school spaces across 22 school districts. The initiative involves repurposing existing school buildings to provide more convenient care for families.

To support this expansion, the province is providing $5 million in capital funding through the Ministry of Infrastructure for renovations and space repurposing. Additionally, $20 million is allocated to support operating costs over the next three years, along with $2 million for startup costs such as staff training and equipment.

Specific regional updates include:

• Nanaimo-Ladysmith: 183 new spaces are being added across several elementary schools, including McGirr, Departure Bay, and Mountain View. • Vernon and Coldstream: 73 new spaces will be available at schools such as Beairsto, Okanagan Landing, Lavington, and Kidston. • East Kootenay: New spaces are being added to T. M. Roberts Elementary in Cranbrook, Marysville Elementary, and Lindsay Park Elementary in Invermere.
