Canadian Conservatives propose cuts to permanent residency admissions
The Conservative Party of Canada is calling on the federal government to reduce permanent residency admissions in upcoming immigration levels plans. Conservative immigration critic Michelle Rempel Garner outlined these demands during a press conference in Ottawa, suggesting that current government policies have contributed to a rise in anti-immigrant sentiment.
In addition to reducing admissions, the Conservatives are advocating for the implementation of exit tracking for temporary residents and increased collaboration with provincial governments. Rempel Garner emphasized the need for a greater focus on newcomer integration to restore public faith in the immigration system and alleviate social tensions.
In response, Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the government remains committed to its goal of making immigration numbers sustainable, asserting that current plans are already working toward that objective.
