Canadian equity markets show divergence between large-cap and junior sectors
Canadian equity markets have shown significant divergence. The S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 16.11% over the past year, reaching 35,145.38, driven by stability in large-cap financials, energy, and major commodity producers. In contrast, the S&P/TSX Venture Composite Index declined by 12.72%, closing at 867.76, as junior explorers and micro-cap companies faced capital constraints and risk-off sentiment despite high commodity prices.
In the aerospace sector, the SpaceQ Canadian Space Index fell 5.4% for the week ending October 9, closing below its 100.00 base. Notable declines included Magellan Aerospace and 5N Plus, which both fell 8.6%. Despite the index drop, NorthStar Earth & Space completed its first week of trading on the NYSE American, and Maritime Launch Services announced a partnership with Galaxia to build an autonomous flight safety system for Spaceport Nova Scotia.
