Canadian film festivals highlight diverse cultural narratives

Two film festivals in Canada are highlighting diverse cultural narratives through their upcoming programming.

The 45th Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), scheduled for October 1–11, 2026, will feature the world premiere of ‘First Comes Love: Nakabingwit’. Directed by Filipino Canadian filmmaker Joella Cabalu, the documentary explores race, identity, and communication within the Filipino diaspora. The film follows three couples in Montreal, Vancouver, and Toronto as they navigate cultural differences and conversations regarding race and privilege within their romantic relationships.

In Victoria, the 12th annual Victoria International Jewish Film Festival will run from October 10 to 15. Organized by the Jewish Community Centre of Victoria, the festival includes eight feature-length films, an international shorts program, and live music. The lineup features works such as ‘Dust Bowls and Jewish Souls’ and ‘Matchmaking 2’, alongside international co-productions like ‘Dead Language’. The event aims to foster community connections and explore universal themes of hope and resilience through a Jewish lens.
