Graphite Projects in Alaska, Quebec, Greenland Boost Supply

Companies are expanding the graphite supply chain to meet rising demand for battery anodes. In the United States, Graphite One is advancing its Graphite Creek mine in Alaska, with an environmental impact statement filed and a federal decision expected on September 29. The project targets production start in 2029 and includes a new synthetic‑graphite plant in Ohio.

In Canada, Global Battery Materials has bought Lomiko Metals for about C$11 million, adding the La Loutre graphite project in Quebec and the Yellow Fox project in Newfoundland and Labrador to its portfolio. The acquisition aims to create a vertically integrated source of natural graphite for lithium‑ion battery anodes, complementing the company’s pilot processing plant in South Korea.

Further north, Greenroc Strategic Minerals has secured a 30‑year licence to develop the Amitsoq graphite deposit in Greenland. The firm plans to produce up to 80,000 tonnes per year by 2030, enough to supply roughly 10‑15 percent of the EU’s projected graphite demand and to create about 200 local jobs. At the same time, U.S. startups are testing sodium‑ion batteries that replace rare lithium‑group minerals with common salt, a technology that could lower costs and reduce reliance on Chinese supply chains. These parallel developments highlight a strategic push to diversify and secure critical battery materials worldwide.
