Canadian NATO intern detained in Belgium on espionage charges
A Canadian woman of Chinese origin, who was working as an intern at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium, has been arrested on suspicion of spying for a third country and of belonging to a criminal organization. Belgian federal prosecutors have extended her pre‑trial detention for another month and gave her 24 hours to lodge an appeal. The suspect, described as being in her 30s and not a student, was close to completing her internship when SHAPE security services reported her behaviour to Belgian intelligence, prompting the investigation.
Canada’s Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, said Canada will review its security‑screening procedures for interns. NATO’s SHAPE spokesperson stated that the case has not affected the alliance’s operational readiness, command and control arrangements, or ongoing missions. Responsibility for security checks on interns rests with the interns’ home countries, in this case Canada.
