Canadian Jazz Pianist Oliver Jones Dies at 91

Oliver Jones, one of Canada’s most celebrated jazz pianists, died on July 22, 2026 at the age of 91, eleven days after his birthday. Born Oliver Theophilus Jones in Montreal’s Little Burgundy neighbourhood to Barbadian parents, he began piano lessons at five and later studied with Daisy Peterson Sweeney, sister of Oscar Peterson.

Jones’s six‑decade career included residencies at Montreal’s Biddles club, tours across Canada, Europe and Africa, and over 30 recordings, many on the Justin Time label. He earned the Officer of the Order of Canada (1993), the National Order of Québec (1994), the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award (2005) and multiple Juno Awards. After retiring in 2000, he returned for a special performance at the 25th Montreal International Jazz Festival. He also taught music at Laurentian University and McGill University, mentoring younger artists.

His death marks the loss of a pivotal figure in Canadian jazz, remembered for his technical brilliance, vibrant performances and contributions to the cultural fabric of Montreal and the nation.
