Canadian labor unions denounce Carney government's new labor law bill

The Carney government is facing criticism from labor organizations following the introduction of new legislation aimed at reforming labor laws. The Canadian Union of Public Workers (SCFP-Québec) has denounced the bill, claiming it serves the interests of employers by undermining fundamental worker rights.

Critics argue the legislation seeks to curb the right to strike and impose restrictive new delays on labor actions. SCFP-Québec leadership stated that the bill creates an imbalance in favor of large economic interests and could discourage employers from negotiating in good faith.

Minister of Jobs and Families Patty Hajdu defended the government's position, suggesting the legislation focuses on the 5% of cases where labor actions lead to significant disruptions. However, opponents argue that targeting these specific instances effectively renders the right to strike meaningless if it can only be exercised when it does not cause disruption.
